Advocacy

We advocate for what we believe in. Here are just some examples of our advocacy work:

- MBJC is presently collaborating with NJ Institute for Social Justice to support Reparations Task Force NJ Senate BIll 322/Assembly Bill 711. A Reparations Task Force will: examine the institution of slavery within the State of NJ and make recommendations for what remedies should be awarded for the wrong and injuries caused by the State.

-Asking our representatives to pass NJ Senate Bill 2656/Assembly Bill 5301, which would make officers' disciplinary records publicly accessible under New Jersey’s Open Public Records Act (OPRA). Complaints filed against officers, final outcomes of Internal Affairs investigations, disciplinary actions, and recordings of incidents would be open records similar to laws in New York, Connecticut, Florida and other states.

-Marching in rallies after the murder of George Floyd and after attacks on Asian Americans.

--Advocating for NJ Assembly Bill 4656/Senate Bill 2963 , which would establish a civilian review board in every municipality to review and investigate complaints against members of the police force of the municipality. In those municipalities that have State Police serve in the role of the municipal police force, the civilian review board would review and investigate complaints against members of the State Police serving in that capacity within the municipality. These boards would serve to foster transparency, fairness, and equality in policing practices and policies, which in turn will help promote positive relations between police and the local communities they serve.
